It can be difficult in business and in life to keep up momentum and reach your goals. When you encounter a setback, it’s easy to become disheartened.
How much hard work you put in is up to you but here a few ideas to help and increase productivity:
Visualise your goals
Visualise your goals and keep in mind how it will feel when you achieve them, this will keep you motivated. Picture the end result and break the process down to little steps, making things more manageable and preventing you from getting overwhelmed and giving up.
Make a plan and stick to it
When you have outlined your plan of action, stick to it. If you can improve your original plan along the way, great! This will give you structure day to day.
Several years ago I met the team at the Payroll Services Centre, a UK payroll bureau who had started specialising in payroll services specifically targeted at schools. I was impressed with the planning that had gone into that decision and the application in making that plan work.
Don’t let setbacks hold you back
Move on, keep working towards your next goal. If something doesn’t work out, put it down to experience. You have just gained precious knowledge and know what to do, or not do, next time.
By staying positive, you are much more likely to spot opportunities and act upon them. Maintaining a positive state of mind will keep you driven and focused on your goals, you will take more chances and they are more likely to pay off.
Organise your personal and work life, this will ensure you have everything to hand if and when you need it. If you are not organised, everything will become more of a struggle than it needs to be.
Don’t mix work and pleasure
If you adhere to the step above and organise your life, your work and personal life will not begin to overlap, giving you time and space to do the things that relax and refresh you. Give yourself clear boundaries. Try not to worry about business in your down time. When you have finished working you will enjoy relaxing, when you are relaxed and work comes around, you will be raring to go.
Recognise when something is working
If something is working well in your business, keep doing it! find ways to make it more effective. On the flip side, recognise when something is not working and either improve it or dismiss it.
Keep your passion and enthusiasm
When you have passion for something it won’t become a chore. Have enthusiasm for something in your life, something that keeps you going. If you are lucky, you will have built a business on your passion, this will show through and make your business more appealing. When things are not doing so well, remember that everyone goes through tough times, dig deep and find that enthusiasm you used to have. Find a new angle on a tired idea and allow it to excite you.
Refer to other businesses in your niche
What do these companies do well? does it work? could you improve it and incorporate it in to your business? Take advantage of anothers experience.
Hopefully these steps will keep you motivated and help you overcome any obstacles. Don’t be too hard on yourself if something doesn’t work out, its a learning curve, take it on the chin and keep moving forward!
